ASTM E2072 / E2073 — Photoluminescent marking

Two photoluminescent standards: what the material is tested to, and how the 90-minute luminance is measured.

StandardASTM E2072 / E2073

ASTM E2072 sets the performance requirements for photoluminescent safety markings — ASTM E2073 is the test method that measures luminance decay over time.

The number that matters is the luminance at the end of the window, not the peak at minute one: a material that peaks at 300 mcd/m² and falls to 4 by minute 90 fails the code requirement it was bought for.

NVR-PL9, NVR-PL30, NVR-PL45 and NVR-PLSN are tested to the pair by SGS (2025-05). The charge condition — 25 lux for 15 minutes — is stated on the report, because a corridor on occupancy sensors often never reaches it.

Tell us the standard. We'll tell you the grade.
